New Life: Spring came and new life was seen everywhere as is usual in the springtime. There was a special new life that came into the world on April 28, 1912. Baby Ruby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Allday who lived at Garlandsville just over the line in Newton County. Mrs. Allday was very sick having experienced 15 convulsions. Three doctors were called out to the home. Two of which may have been Drs. Gilmore and Wilson, things were so critical that little Ruby, weighing just 1 and a half pounds, was more or less put aside. But a neighbor, known to Ruby as "Maw Wall" (Mrs. Lula Wall) wrapped her up, took her to her house where she was put into a long biscuit pan and then into the cook stove oven to warm her up. Everyday when Mrs. Wall finished her baking and the oven cooled, she would put the baby into the oven for warmth. Mrs. Wall used this method until baby and mother were strong enough to be reuinted. Ruby grew up and married Willie Crane. Both will be remembered by many of you. Mr. Crane worked for the city for several years and they reared their family here, buying the J. T. Lester place on Wickware Road. (Story confirmed by Ruby Crane).
